Classes and Workshops

This year I began expanding my quilting experience when I started teaching a variety of quilting classes at my local quilt shop. Interest is picking up and I am adding classes at additional shops to my calendar. I'm also willing to offer presentations or workshops to guilds. The following is a list of programs I have developed and classes/workshops. Currently focusing on the greater area within a day's drive of home--Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, and northwest Arkansas. Please contact me for availability and fees.

Guild Presentations:

One Block Wonderful!
This 45 minute to 1 hour program takes you through my journey of creating quilts with 60 degree triangles, initially starting with a One Block Wonder, jumping to a Stack-and-Whack, combining the two for a unique look, and continuing on to create my own technique for turning 7 panels into stunning hexified panel quilts. While all are similar, each has its own twist to make it different.

Free Motion Quilting on Your Home Machine
Overview of tips and techniques to create beautiful free motion quilting on your home machine.

Classes and Workshops:

Playing with One Block Wonders
This 6-hour class takes participants through matching up their six layers of fabric, cutting strips into 60 degree triangle sets, and starts you off on stitching your hexies. Discussion and demonstration of layout options will get you started on making your own one-of-a-kind color-flow OBW quilt.

Hexified Panel Play
Two or three day workshop guides you through the process of using six identical panels to make the hexies out of 60 degree triangles and using them to create a unique color flow to frame a seventh panel for a different look.

Free Motion Quilting on Your Home Machine
This 6-hour workshop introduces you to free motion quilting on your sewing machine. Learn about FMQ techniques including easy grid-based designs, stitch-in-the-ditch with or without a walking foot, simple free motion fills, and using stencils to add interest and texture to your quilts. Bring your machine to get some hands-on practice quilting an Ohio Star mini-quilt with an opportunity to ask questions and troubleshoot during class.

Free Motion Quilting Skill Building Workshop, 2-Day
Review of basic FMQ techniques and transition into tracing and stitching your own top or wholecloth design. Perfect for quilting a baby quilt or wall hanging while building skills. A variety of stencils and printed quilting designs will be available to choose from to mark a project of your choice. Two days gives you plenty of time to mark, practice, and apply your new skills to your project in class.

Beginning Quilting 101
Designed to be a 6-week series meeting for 3 hours each week with homework between, you will learn enough basics of quilting to get you launched or sharpen your skills. General overview of techniques include rotary cutting, straight and curved piecing, machine and hand applique. During the series you will piece six different blocks, add sashing and borders, layer with batting and backing, and learn basic stitch-in-the-ditch quilting to secure all of your seams. Trimming and adding your binding will be covered in the final class. This could be condensed to a two or three 6-hour day workshop to cover all of the basics, providing enough time to make the blocks in class.

Classes available by request on other techniques including, but not limited to:
  • Foundation paper piecing
  • Fusible machine applique
  • Twilling
  • Beginning hand embroidery
  • What to do with a jelly roll
  • English paper piecing
  • Hand applique
